Admission to Fine Arts Institute from this year
The first meeting of Institute of Fine Arts, Chittagong was held on Wednesday marking official functioning of the institute under Chittagong University. Merging Chittagong Government Arts College and Department of Fine Arts of Chittagong University, the institute started its journey on the Chittagong Government Arts College campus at 721 Badsha Mia Road on August 2. Prof Dr Jasim Uddin, who took office as the first director of Institute on the same day in presence of CU Registrar Prof Dr Md Shah Alam, presided over the meeting. The meeting decided to start admission to BFA (Honours) first year for the year 2010-2011. Prof Abul Mansoor, Prof Mansur Ul Karim, Prof Nasima Banu, Prof Dr Fayezul Azim, Prof Alok Roy, Prof KM Kayum and other teachers were present at the meeting. Eviction of billboard protested
Disability Rights Group (DRG) formed a human chain in the port city on Wednesday protesting eviction of a billboard erected as a part of carrying out awareness campaign for the persons with disability. Over one hundred persons with disability participated in the human chain programme formed in front of Chittagong Press Club in collaboration with Unite Theatre for Social Action (UTSA) and Alliance of Urban DPOs in Chittagong. Speakers at the programme said DRG in association with UTSA erected the billboard in the city's AK Khan Gate intersection putting up rights of the persons with disability. It was one of the five billboards erected in five divisional towns of the country by National Forum of Organisations Working with the Disabled (NFOWD) with the assistance of Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) back in 2007. The billboard at AK Khan Gate was erected after taking due approval from Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and Chittagong district administration. Former acting mayor and present Mayor M Manjur Alam also gave permission for erecting the billboard without any tax, they said. However, a vested quarter that might be up to grab the government khas land there broke down the billboard in the first week of June, 2010. They demanded immediate arrest of the culprits, compensation and re-erection of the billboard. Several non-government development organisations like YPSA, Sangshaptak, Naojawan, AWAK, Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha, Disability Rights Movement and CDDS expressed solidarity with programme. Booth for women investors opens
With a view to bringing intended and conscious women under the net of stock market an exclusive booth for woman investors was opened in the port city on Wednesday. Chittagong Capital Ltd, a corporate member of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) and a sister concern of GP H Group, opened the booth for woman investors at its Agrabad branch at Kashfia Plaza. MA Malek, editor of local daily the Dainik Azadi, and Khaleda Awal, senior vice-president of Chittagong Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry, were the chief guest and the special guest at the inaugural ceremony. GP H Group Chairman and Chittagong Capital Limited Managing Director M Jahangir Alam chaired the meeting where CSE Chief Executive Officer Prof Dr Abdullah Mamun spoke among others. Speakers at the function said the exclusive booth would encourage women investors to invest in capital market and contribute to the country's economic development. To facilitate treatment of paralysed patients, Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) will set up a branch in Chittagong soon. CRP Founder Valerie A Taylor said this at a view exchange meeting with Chittagong City Corporation Mayor M Manjur Alam at the latter's residence at North Kattoli on Saturday. The new branch would be set up in a 14,000 square feet building on around 2.5 acres of land donated by AK Khan Foundation in Kalurghat area in the port city, said the CRP chief. Many of the paralysed patients of Chittagong can hardly receive the long-term treatment from the CRP at Savar in Dhaka. So, the new branch would help paralysed patients of greater Chittagong get treatment saving money and time, she said. Manjur termed it a noble and timely venture and assured her of all out support to run the treatment centre branch through raising fund. The CCC mayor also called upon the rich to come forward extending support to the noble venture. AK Khan Foundation Trustee Secretary Salahuddin Kashem Khan, CRP directors Mushtaq Ahmad and Emdad Moslem, AK Khan Company Limited DGM Shamsuddin Khan attended the meeting.
