Workshop on bamboo products beginsA 15-day workshop began in the port city of Chittagong on Sunday with a call for familiarising bamboo and cane products as well as using bamboo as substitute for wood. Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI) organised the workshop at its auditorium under Market Development of Bamboo and Raton Products Potential (2nd Phase) Project being implemented with the financial assistant of Common Fund for Commodities of the Netherlands. BFRI Director Dr Md Wahid Baksh presided over the inaugural session of the workshop. Dr Baksh said the workshop aimed at providing training on producing and preserving bamboo in BFRI invented method and popularising bamboo products that can be a great source of income for the rural people. BFRI Chief Research Officer Dr Md Mokhlesur Rahman, Prof Leo Ziang of Wood Science and Technology Department of Nanjhing Forest University, China and technical expert Zheo Jhiang Lee spoke as the guests at workshop where 25 trainees from six districts under Chittagong division participated. Developing skill in bamboo and cane products of quality and modern design can open up scope for exporting such items to different countries in Europe and America, the speakers said. Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University Teachers Association leaders called for restoring normalcy at the university to help hold the five-day 8th International Scientific Seminar from September 21. They in a statement on Saturday said the university has been organising international scientific seminars for the last seven years. Preparation is going on to hold the 8th seminar in participation of veterinary scientists from the UK, the USA, Denmark, Japan, Italy, Australia, Thailand, Afghanistan and Saarc countries when agitation under the banner of a student organisation was posing threat to holding the seminar. The 50th founding anniversary of Shahi Commercial College, the oldest institution in the port city, running under technical education board, was observed on Thursday. On the occasion, a discussion and doa mahfil were held on the college premises of Noor Ahmed Sarak in the city's Kazir Dewry area. Chinese IT company, City Computer Corporation Ltd, will set up data entry centre in Chittagong. A four-member delegation of the company led by Sumiyuki Kawahara during a five-day visit on Saturday appointed some IT experts in this regard. Exchanging view with Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) leaders visiting delegation leader Kawahara said 400 IT personnel would be appointed to work in two shifts and 200 computers would be provided for the centre in Chittagong. He hoped that the centre would help develop skilled manpower and create jobs and sought cooperation from CCCI in this regard.
