Workshop on bamboo products endsSpeakers at the concluding and certificate giving ceremony of a 15-day training workshop on Thursday said bamboo products are disappearing from the society though bamboo is available in Bangladesh. The workshop was held at the BFRI auditorium in the port city organised by Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI) for the workers of bamboo industry. There are 33 species of bamboo in Bangladesh and the demand for bamboo products is increasing in Europe and America as these are being used as alternative to wood and plastic, they said. Proper training, application of technique for making standard products and integrated system for marketing them would create opportunity to export bamboo products abroad, they added. BFRI Chief Research Officer Mohammad Abdul Malek, Prof Leo Ziang and Assistant Professor Zheo Jhiang Lee of Nanjing Forestry University, China, BFRI Wood Composite Department Divisional Officer Khurshid Akter and Technology Transfer Department Divisional Officer Kabir Uddin Ahmed spoke at the function with BFRI Director Dr Mohammad Wahed Baksha in the chair. Six trainers from China and the US provided training on increasing skills, making standard bamboo products, design and finishing to 28 local bamboo product makers. Southeast Bank SME branch opens
SME Agriculture Branch of Southeast Bank opened at Lohagara upzila in the district on Sunday. Managing Director Mahbubul Alam inaugurated the branch as the chief guest while Deputy Managing Director Mohammad Gofran, Branch Manager NM Hossain Akbar, Mostafa Group Vice President Shafique Uddin and Lohagara Upazila Chairman Ziaul Haque Chowdhury were also present on the occasion. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Acting Mayor Mohammad Hossain and chairmen of CCC standing committees held a meeting at the CCC auditorium on Tuesday. Twenty chairmen of the standing committees were present at the meeting and briefed about their activities. Three committees on power, conservancy and markets have been asked to remain active on the occasion of Eid Ul Azha and Durga Puja. Reunion of former councillors since 1994 and formation of councillor forum were also discussed at the meeting. Agreement to survey important installations
Concord Group signed an agreement with AIT Consulting in the port city on Sunday entrusting the latter for conducting survey on its different installations. As per the agreement AIT Consulting -- a reputed consulting firm of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, would carry out survey to assess strength and earthquake resistance of important installations through reviewing infrastructural aspects. AIT consulting would determine measures and suggest retrofit design any installation may require for increasing durability. AIT Consulting Chief Executive Dr Navid Anwar and Concord Group Managing Director SK Lala signed the agreement on behalf of their respective side in presence of Concord Group Chairman SM Kamaluddin at Concord's local office. Court orders further probe in Hafsa murder
A court in the port city on Monday asked the detective branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police to conduct further investigation into the death of Umme Hafsa that took place in August last year. The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Md Azizul Haque made the order following a “Naraji” (non-acceptance) petition made by Bangladesh Human Rights Foundation (BHRF) against the investigation report submitted by Pahartali police last week. In the order the court directed Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police for making the further investigation. Umme Hafsa died on August 19 last year three days after her parents allegedly beat her mercilessly at their rented hose of Green View Residential Area under the city's Pahartali police station. Advocate Zia Habib Ahsan and Advocate Md Sharif Uddin of BHRF appeared for the petitioner on the hearing on the Naraji Petition.
