Mayor ensures steps for peaceful Durga Puja
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Mohammad Manjur Alam said the city corporation will take all necessary steps to celebrate the incoming Durga Puja amid religious fervour, festivity and peaceful atmosphere. He was addressing as chief guest a view exchange meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad Chittagong city unit at the city corporation conference room on Wednesday. Parishad Chittagong division unit Organising Secretary Advocate Chandan Dhar and General Secretary Rana Biswas spoke at the meeting with its city unit President Dr Timir Baran Chowdhury in the chair. Manjur in his speech said the CCC would take steps for providing generators, drinking water, lighting materials and ensuring security at the Puja mandaps in the city during the four-day religious festival. Measures for the immersion of idols would also be taken in Patenga sea beach, he added. Chittagong University (CU) Pro-vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Alauddin urged the students to be more attentive in study and to acquire knowledge in science and technology to prepare themselves to cope with the modern world. He was addressing a fresher and farewell reception ceremony of chemistry department of the university on Monday. Chairman of the department Prof Dr Md Jamaluddin presided over the meeting held at the Gallery No. 1 at the Science Faculty. Prof Md Jahurul Alam Chowdhury, Prof Dr Md Abdus Salam and Prof Dr Shahanara Begum of the department also spoke at the function. Naima Khaled Monika and Mejbah Uddin were elected president and general secretary of Chittagong district unit of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (SCF) at its 6th conference at the Central Shaheed Minar in the port city on Tuesday. Speakers at the inaugural session of the conference urged the students to play active and pioneering role in the agitation for protecting national resources side by side intensifying the movement against commercialisation of education. Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) Chittagong district unit convener Manash Nandi inaugurated the conference with SCF district unit President Saifuzzaman Sakon in the chair. Awami League (AL) leaders at a discussion on Friday urged the party activists to follow the path of devoted leaders like former city unit president late MA Mannan to serve the society. The discussion was organised by Bakalia thana unit AL, marking the first death anniversary of former city unit president MA Mannan with AL ward unit President Nurul Azam in the chair. Speakers at the discussion said leaders like Mannan did politics for welfare of the people and the country not for personal benefits. They called for strengthening the party at grassroots level to foil conspiracy by the anti-liberation forces.
