Mercantile Bank brokerage house opensMercantile Bank Limited launched its sixth brokerage house on the premises of CEPZ branch on Thursday. The Bank Chairman Adul Jalil MP inaugurated the house. Jalil in his speech said it would be easy for the city dwellers to conduct their business activities through this house. Mercantile Bank has taken initiatives to provide customers with highest quality service at a lower commission, he said, adding that the prospective customers of the city can avail the facilities. Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdury urged the grassroots level leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) and its front organisations to help the government fulfil the election pledges the party made before the last parliament election. She urged them not to engage in activities that could diminish image of the party. She was addressing as the chief guest a meeting in memory of party presidium member Ataur Rahman Khan Kaisar. Chittagong South district unit AL organised the meeting at Muslim Institute Hall on Saturday. Lawmakers Abul Kashem Master, Samshul Haque Chowdhury, Chemon Ara Taiyab, and Maher Afroz Chumki and South district unit General Secretary Moslem Uddin Ahmed spoke at the discussion with South district unit President Akhterurzaman Chowdhury Babu in the chair. Matia said Kaisar worked for the organisation through out his life remaining indifferent to amassing wealth. She said Kaisar came forward to play his due role as presidium member during the confinement of party President Sheikh Hasina as confusion arised after the 1/11 among many party leaders. Besides his wife was ill. The speakers said despite being member of an affluent family, Kaisar could become people's leader. This honest man had always been adhered to the principles of Awami League and fought for the common people, they added. Call to save Karnaphuli from pollution
Speakers at a human chain programme in the port city on Thursday demanded immediate steps to save Karnaphuli from pollution and encroachment. Jano Udyog, an environmental organisation, organised the event in association with the Peoples' Voice in front of Chittagong Press Club. Environmentalist Prof Idris Ali and Prof Md Yunus were present at the programme with organisation coordinator Sharif Chowhan in the chair. Speakers demanded of the government to take immediate steps to resume capital dredging in the river Karnaphuli to keep its navigation channel alive and recover its land from the grabbers according to the directive of the High Court. They also welcomed the drives by the Department of Environment led by Director (Enforcement) Munir Chowdhury which is awarding penalty to the industries responsible for polluting the river. They, however, called for intensifying the drives. They said failure to save the river will greatly endanger the future of the port city. View exchange meet on JSC exams
A view exchange meeting on holding incoming Junior School Certificate (JSC) examinations in a disciplined manner was held on Saturday at Government Women's College auditorium. Secretaries and teachers of various examination centres from Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban participated in the discussion organised by Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (BSHS), Chittagong. Additional Divisional Commissioner Md Alif Uddin was present as the chief guest at the meeting chaired by BSHS Chittagong Chairman Prof Muhammad Abu Zafar Chowdhury. Alif said instructions have already been given to the upzila administration to cooperate during the examinations. Zafar sought cooperation from all related bodies in holding examination in a congenial atmosphere. Sources said 1,05,041 students are due to appear at 177 examination centres across five districts. A vigilance team will be formed to oversee the examinations. 'Ensure Sundarbans' place in list of seven wonders’
Speakers urged all to ensure the place of the Sundarbans in the list of seven wonders of nature. They emphasised the need for making the people more conscious about the campaign going on in this regard. They were addressing a press conference organised by Media Reflection, a private organisation, at Chittagong Press Club (CPC) on Saturday. Dibendu Udas, coordinator of the organisation, read out a written statement at the conference. He said they are going to arrange a 10-day tourism fair in collaboration with Parjatan Corporation from November 4 at Hotel Saikot in Chittagong to attract the people about the voting for the Sundarbans. He said they would try to attract attention of the mass people through different kinds of videos, cultural programmes and booklets. “Our aim is to collect the vote for the Sundarbans at the fair where the people will be able to cast their votes in booths,” he said.
