HC asks IGP to stop extortion by cops
The High Court yesterday directed the inspector general of police to form a committee to monitor the activities of police at Aricha ferry ghat so that they cannot extort money from cargos, trucks and other vehicles.
In response to a writ petition, the court also summoned three police officers of Goalando Police Camp in Rajbari on charge of assaulting a journalist and threatening to kill him in crossfire.
An HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain directed the police officers to appear before it on January 26 for placing their explanations on allegations against them.
The cops are Md Firoz, in-charge of the police camp, and its sub-inspector Nazrul, and assistant sub-inspector Md Kabir.
Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) on January 18 filed the petition.
