Three women killed daily in 2010: Survey
Almost 16 cases of violence against women occurred daily in Bangladesh last year, totalling 5,743 incidences with three women being killed every day, says a survey based on newspaper reports.
With this note, 11 ministries and nine United Nations (UN) agencies, jointly working to combat violence against women, launched a two-day Inception Workshop at a city hotel yesterday.
The workshop aims to find areas of future collaboration of the government with UN counterparts under the project titled 'The Joint Programme to Address Violence Against Women', said speakers at the inaugural session.
Speakers added that the daily cases mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg as most cases still remain unreported, unnoticed and even accepted in the society especially incidences of domestic violence.
UN Resident Coordinator Arthur Erken said, “Any forms of violence affects or even destroys a woman's self-esteem, her health, denies her of her human rights and undermines her potential and full involvement in society.
“A coordinated multi-sectoral and sustainable approach is the right way to combat violence against women.”
Speakers recommended that young boys and men should be engaged through this programme to play a significant role for the prevention of violence against women.
Dr Noor Mohammad, assistant representative of UNFPA, and Sultana Nasira Khan, joint secretary of Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, also spoke.
