Four candidates out of nine in Habiganj-1 and Brahmanbaria-3 by-polls slated for January 27 are accused in different cases. Of them, one is accused in a murder case while others in different civil cases, said a report of Shushashoner Jonney Nagorik (Shujan). Shujan made the disclosure at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity yesterday. Of the nine candidates, seven are businessmen, one is a farmer and another a lawyer, the report said. Of them, two candidates own moveable and immovable properties worth between Tk 1 crore and Tk 10 crore, two between Tk 15 lakh and Tk 25 lakh, one between Tk 50 lakh and Tk 1 crore, one between Tk 5 lakh and 15 lakh and the rest three own properties below Tk 5 lakh. Among them, two have loan liabilities while two others have taxable incomes worth Tk 3 lakh or more per annum. Addressing the press conference, Shujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder said, “We have prepared the report after scrutinising the information submitted to the election commission by the candidates.” The culture of submitting right information during local government and national elections will help democratic practice flourish in the country, he said. “This practice will help the candidates gain public faith and accountability. The voters will be able to pick honest and skilled candidates.” Referring to the practice of involving businessmen in politics, Majumder said both national and local level politics are going under the control of businessmen. “The parliament has turned into a club of millionaires,” he added. There is no female candidate in the upcoming by-polls. It reflects woman participation in politics is decreasing day by day, he observed. Shujan executive member Abul Maksud said, “The municipal polls were held in a free and fair manner, but the last day witnessed direct political influence in some municipalities.” Shujan assistant secretary Jakir Hossain also spoke.
