Six Hizb ut-Tahrir men held

Six suspected members of banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir Bangladesh were arrested in the city's Jhigatola yesterday. They are Sheikh Shah Newaz Sultan, 23, Ferdous Wahid, 23, Nawajis Azam, 22, Ashifur Rahman, 23, ASM Towhidul Islam, 18, and Al Amin, 20. All of them are students of Dhaka University (DU) from different departments. A Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) 2 team held them while moving suspiciously at about 4:30am in Jhigatola bus stand and recovered 50 leaflets and 16 posters containing anti-state and anti-government slogans. ASP Mohammad Shafiul Sarwar, also an operation officer of Rab 2, told The Daily Star that the arrestees admitted that they all are Dhaka University students and members of Hizb ut-Tahrir. Meanwhile, nine Tahir members arrested on Wednesday from Dhakhin Khan and Hazaribagh in the city yesterday were remanded for three days each for interrogation. Earlier, HM Shamsuddoha, Ashiqur Rahman, Mohammad Masud Alam, Mohammad Firoz Alam, Kazi Abid Nur, Mohammad Saidul Islam, Abu Taher Mohammad Masud, Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan and Rahel Ahammad were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka with a seven-day remand prayer.
