98pc power demand to be met in 2-yr: Ashraf

LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam yesterday said 98 percent of the country's electricity demand will be satisfied within the next two years. The government has already taken initiatives to increase power production, he said. Syed Ashraf yesterday inaugurated Chittagong Apparel and Accessories Exposition (CAFAXPO)-2011 in the port city. At the inaugural ceremony, he also said power and gas are the two main components for the industrialisation in the country. The minister termed the garment industry one of the most important sectors of the country's economy. Lots of women will be jobless if the industry is destroyed, and it will hamper the headway of women empowerment, he said. First vice-president of BGMEA Nasir Uddin said about 60 lakh people are involved in garment industry. The government does not treat the industry properly as it was supposed to do, he said, urging the government to give more support to the sector. Awami League lawmaker Akhtaruzzaman said, “As an industrialist, I know how the entrepreneurs suffer for the bureaucratic tangles.” Also chairman of parliamentary standing committee on jute and textile ministry, Akhtaruzzaman, said the industry globally promoted Bangladesh. He also laid emphasis on keeping aware of enemies trying relentlessly to create unrest in the industry. Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Manjur Alam said 764 garment industries are now operating in the port city. It is now proved that Chittagong is an industry-friendly city and safe for investment, he added.
