Four-state Forum Held in China

The two-day 9th forum of Bangladesh, China, India, and Myanmar on regional economic cooperation was held in Kunming of China's Yunnan province on January 18-19.
Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes, Vice Governor of Yunnan province Gu Chaoxi, former Indian foreign secretary Eric Gonsalves, and Deputy Foreign Minister of Myanmar U Maung Myint led the delegations for the meeting.
Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping attended the meeting and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony on behalf of Chinese foreign ministry, says a message received here yesterday.
Cheng said the forum is an important sub-regional cooperation mechanism of the region and plays an important role in deepening pragmatic cooperation between the member states, enhancing their friendly exchanges, and promoting their common development.
The Chinese government attaches great importance to the relations with South Asian countries and strongly supports the development of the forum, he said.
China's government will continue to support the active participation of Yunnan province in the forum and strive for new and greater progress of the forum, he added.
The meeting issued a “joint statement” that says about the four parties' consensus on a number of issues such as promoting the establishment of a cooperation mechanism featuring a multi-track initiative with track I coordination, setting up a business council, promoting inter-connectivity, and holding car rally.
