US to hand over killers of Bangabandhu
New law on the cards in this regard, says Moriarty
The US Ambassador James F Moriarty said killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibar Rahman hiding in the United States would be handed over to Bangladesh after enacting law, which is now under process.
He also hoped that trial of war criminals would be held maintaining international standard and the United States will extend full cooperation to the government in this regard.
Moriarty gave the assurance at a press conference at Khulna Club auditorium in the city yesterday before inauguration of a three-day long America Week on its premises.
The America Week highlights the important ties between the people of the US and Bangladesh by taking the embassy's activities to people outside Dhaka.
The US ambassador said for Bangladesh to move forward, Khulna must move forward with its vital port and growing business. Because, Khulna demonstrates the kind of entrepreneurial energy and innovation that will benefit the entire country, he said.
Moriarty said Bangladesh and United States work together closely on issues affecting the entire world such as climate change, health care and food security.
In fact, Bangladesh has a well-deserved reputation as a global partner across many fronts. Besides, Bangladesh is the number one contributor to international peacekeeping operations and lends its disaster management expertise to places such as Pakistan and Haiti, he said.
KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque at the press conference pointed out US contributions in different sectors of the country.
Moriarty said, “Bangladesh is an important friend and partner of the United States. We have a longstanding relationship and are proud to have provided more than 5.8 billion US dollars in development assistance since Bangladesh's independence.”
“As Bangladesh moves to a trade, not aid driven economy, let's note also that the US is Bangladesh's most important trading partner,” he said.
The US ambassador inaugurated the week after the press conference.
