Proper housing in cyclone-prone areas stressed
Speakers at a symposium yesterday stressed the need to find proper housing designs for people in areas vulnerable to natural disasters like cyclone.
The three-day international expert working symposium titled 'Technical Design for Community Adapted Affordable Housing, 2011' is being held at LGED-RDEC Bhaban, jointly organised by Practical Action, Reset and UK Aid.
Addressing the inaugural session yesterday as the chief guest, Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury said a lot of discussions and studies have been carried out on cyclone resistant housing over the last three years but results were not practically applied.
“Now is the time to turn it to reality,” said Jamilur, suggesting on evaluating and selecting the best design from those already prepared by different agencies.
He also suggested on making such designs so that farmlands remain untouched as its numbers are declining day by day.
Disaster Management and Relief Division Secretary Dr M Aslam Alam suggested on finding a safer and better design than CI sheets as it is not environmentally friendly and is dangerous.
Practical Action Bangladesh Country Director Veena Khaleque, Reset, UK Director and Trustee Nikki Linsel and Practical Action Bangladesh team leader Iqbal Karim also addressed the symposium.
