The Daily Star in partnership with Champs21 is organising a nationwide online quiz competition titled “Brain Brats,” the first ever in Bangladesh. Speaking at a meeting with the principals and teachers of some English medium schools at The Daily Star Centre yesterday, the head of Champs21 Russel T Ahmed said all students from any English medium school can participate in the competition by logging on to www.champs21.com, the first e-learning and online academic assessment service website in the country. Scheduled to start on February 7, the competition titled Brain Brats is for class III to X students of English medium schools across the country. “Children these days are drawn to the Internet more than books. The Internet is like a worldwide blackboard. This competition would be one way to prepare our kids for the global competition,” said Ahmed. The competition will be held in three phases and it will focus on science, math and general knowledge as per curriculum of the English medium schools. During the first round, students taking part in the online quiz can take the test as many times as they wish within two weeks from the beginning of the contest. The system will only keep the best scores of the participant. All the questions will be asked from school syllabus. While participating the quiz, students will also be provided with supplementary reading materials, which include links to related educational websites on the particular topic. For the general knowledge part, The Daily Star will publish a 'Knowledge Corner' in The Daily Star with two topics daily to help participants prepare for the quiz and assessments. The second round will be offline. Ten students from each class of each school will be selected for the second round, which will be held on school premises. The grand finale will take place on March 12 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. Selected participants from the second round would compete with a laptop. The grand finale will be telecast live on TV. The winners from each class will be declared Brain Brats. The winner schools will be declared as the 'Champion School' while parents of winners will be Champion Parent. Special prize will go to mothers of each Brain Brat. Shedding light on the competition, Editor of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam said, “The idea of wealth has changed these days. Today it is judged by creativity and innovativeness. With the competition we are trying to challenge the creative minds.”
