Man jailed for 'smuggling' statue
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) recovered a black-stone statue of the Hindu God Bishnu and arrested an alleged smuggler at Godagari upazila in Rajshahi yesterday.
A team of Rab-5 raided the house of one Babu Ram at the village Chabbis Nagar Chhoyghati in the upazila and found the statue there. Babu Ram is absconding.
According to Rab officials, the 30-inch long and 14-inch wide statue weighs around 35kg and costs around Tk 1 crore.
Following arrest, Rabi Nath, 25, was produced before a court, said officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station. The court sent Rabi to jail on charge of smuggling statues.
