Call to seize accounts of river grabbers
Bank accounts of river grabbers can be seized as an innovative method to curb river grabbing, a roundtable was told yesterday.
Instead of spending valuable money and manpower to evict encroachments in rivers, seizing bank accounts of the grabbers until they remove the illegal structures by themselves would be a more effective way, it was told.
The seminar on “Reclaiming Buriganga: Review of Activities: Noting the Priorities” organised by Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) at the National Press Club in the city yesterday.
Environmentalists at the roundtable stressed the need for devising an integrated and collaborative master plan to protect rivers.
Abdus Sobhan of the Department of Environment,BIWTA Chairman Abdul Malek Miah, former Buet vice chancellor MM Shafiullah,folk singer Kuddus Bayati and POBA Chairman Abu Naser Khan spoke.
