Speakers at a seminar yesterday called for a stop to interference by lawmakers and bureaucrats in local government activities for better development at the grassroots level.
They termed the mandatory advisory role of lawmakers in Upazila Parishad Act as against the spirit of democratic practice.
They were speaking at a national seminar titled 'Decentralisation and development activities of the government', organised by Governance Advocacy Forum at the Jatiya Press Club in the city.
Speakers stressed on speeding up decentralisation of power as promised during the election, adding that there is a serious lack of coordination between the central and local government.
Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed said the government is keen on decentralisation of power but at first it must be seen whether the local government is ready to handle responsibilities dealt by central government.
The forum Coordinator Mohsin Ali presented the keynote paper with Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman in the chair.
Hasanul Haque Inu, Meher Afroze Chumki; Mujahidul Islam Selim and Abdul Majid also spoke on the occasion.
