Hijacked MV Jahan Moni
Relatives of crew protest ship officials' misbehaviour
Family members of three crewmembers confined in hijacked Bangladeshi ship MV Jahan Moni staged a four-hour sit-in at the ship's owning firm's office here yesterday protesting misbehaviour of the officials.
They also demanded the government to take immediate initiative for the safe rescue of the crew, whose physical condition are deteriorating.
Several crewmembers managed to talk with family members on Friday night and informed that they were suffering from different diseases and acute crisis of food and water.
The crew's family members are Third Officer Kamrul Islam's wife Mina Parvin, Electrical Engineer Mohammad Shahbu Alam's wife Afroza Akhter and Engine Cadet Shariar Rabbi's mother Bilkis Rahman.
They went to the office of the ship's owning and operating firm Brave Royal Ship Management Limited at Agrabad around 1:00pm, taking with them a voice record of the last telephone conversation between a crew and his mother.
On that conversation, the crew told his mother that they were being provided with little bread and some sugar to eat and limited seawater mixed with chemicals to drink.
As they requested senior officials to take steps to arrange food for the crew, one of the officials Shahjalal Mazumder, a manager of Brave Royal, misbehaved with them, sources said.
The three guardians then sat on the office floor as protest and left around 4:30pm when Shahjahan sought apology from them, sources said.
Brave Royal Managing Director Meherul Karim said the incident occurred as both the family members and the official became emotional and lost temper.
He said the conversation with the pirates on Saturday was positive.
