JU BCL men want their expulsion lifted

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders of Janhangirnagar University yesterday demanded withdrawal of their expulsion notice issued following an intra-party clash at Al-Beruni Hall on the campus on July 5 last year. They alleged that JU Vice-chancellor (VC) Sharif Enamul Kabir and his allies had expelled the BCL leaders to ease their corruption activities in appointing teachers and officials and to dominate the campus as per their own wish. “We demanded prime minister's intervention to withdraw our expulsion and ensure security on the campus,” said BCL JU unit president Rashedul Islam Shafin at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) in the city. The VC and his allies are conspiring to remove the real BCL leaders and to introduce some of their fans as BCL men to establish their own supremacy at the university, he said. Shafin alleged that the investigation report on the clash has not been submitted before the syndicate body. But before receiving the report, how the syndicate members expelled the BCL leaders? He also said the VC had adopted a strategy to make happen intra-party clashes one after one to maintain his own domination on the campus. The unit general secretary Nirjhor Alam Shammo said although the VC was appointed by the ruling party, he patronised BNP-Jamaat backed teachers in the senate election. Nirjhor said Firoza Hossain, Rafiquzzaman, Abdur Rob, Muhammad Tarek Chowdhury, and Fahmina Ahmed are among those who had linked with BNP-Jamaat earlier. “During last two years, the VC had appointed a lot of teachers and officials taking personal benefit instead of merit,” he said. He also alleged that the VC is grabbing money through tender manipulation of different construction works and through appointment business. A number of the unit BCL leaders were present at the press conference. Following the clash on July 5 last year, the BCL central committee postponed all activities of the committee. Despite repeated efforts over phone, the correspondent could not communicate with the VC.
