260 per 1 lakh cancer patients die a year
Say experts
Some 260 in every one-lakh cancer patients die annually in Bangladesh while about 21-lakh people are suffering from the disease at present, experts said yesterday.
By the year 2050, the number of cancer deaths will rise to 1,150 in every one lakh, as infection of the disease is increasing alarmingly, they said.
On the occasion of World Cancer Day today, experts at different programmes stressed the need to increase social awareness to prevent cancer and non-communicable diseases.
The theme of World Cancer Day this year is “Teach children and teenagers to avoid ultra violet (UV) exposure by being Sun Smart.”
A scientific seminar was held at an auditorium of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Experts there said the country has less than 250 cancer specialists to attend a vast 21-lakh patients.
Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Malik, secretary general of National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute, was present at the seminar as the chief guest. BSMMU Vice-chancellor Prof Pran Gopal Datta and Dr Sarwar Alam also spoke.
Dhaka Ahsania Mission organised a discussion at its Dhanmondi Mission Bhaban auditorium attended by Social Welfare Minister Enamul Haque and National Professor Dr MR Khan.
