BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain yesterday said the country has no need of any new airport in the next 20-30 years if the capacity of existing airport is utilised properly. He said the government cancelled the decision of building airport in Arial Beel fearing the people's wrath, not showing respects to the demand of the opposition leader. Delwar also opposed the prime minister's speech saying that people's pressure forced the government to cancel the plan to build airport in Munshiganj. The BNP leader was briefing journalists following a meeting at the party office in the city yesterday. He alleged that the premier misguided people. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said a new airport is a must for new generation, but the airport would be build on the other side of the river Padma instead of Arial Beel. She said the decision was made to respect the demand of the opposition leader as well as a section of Munshiganj people who feared they would be affected if the airport were built in Arial Beel. Replying a question, Delwar said his party took all preparation to make Monday's hartal a success and hope people will observe the hartal spontaneously. He demanded immediate withdrawal of the cases against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other leaders of the party. BNP has called hartal to protest price spike of essentials, plundering of share market money, and deterioration of law and order, he said. Delwar urged the government not to obstruct their protest programme, as they will observe it peacefully.
