Sri Lankan independence day observed in Dhaka
The 63rd anniversary of Sri Lanka's Independence was observed in Dhaka at the Sri Lanka High Commissioner's Residence on Friday in three phases, says a press release.
In the first phase, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Bangladesh, Sarath Kumara Weragoda, hoisted the national flag. It was attended by a large gathering of the Sri Lankan community here.
Clergies representing Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians along with the Sri Lankan military officers on training in Bangladesh were also present.
This was followed by the playing of the National Anthem, lighting of the traditional Oil Lamp, and reciting Jaya Mangala Gatha.
A two-minute silence was observed in honour of the National Heroes of Sri Lanka followed by religious observances carried out by the respective clergy.
The President's Independence Day Message was read out in Sinhala, Tamil, and English followed by the High Commissioner's address.
A Reception was hosted for the Diplomatic Corps at the same venue. Among the other dignitaries were the former president of Bangladesh, chiefs of Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The government of Bangladesh was represented by Land Minister Rezaul Karim Hira, as chief guest, and Mrs Karim.
The land minister said the two countries enjoy a firm bond of friendship based on identical views on politics, democracy, human rights, and common interests.
In the third phase was a reception coupled with a musical evening, sponsored by the Sri Lankan community. The function saw a gathering of over 300 guests.
