10 die, 26 hurt in road crashes

Ten people, including a Dhaka University unit student leader, were killed and 26 others injured in road accidents in Pabna, Gazipur, Chandpur, Jhenaidah, Laxmipur and Narayanganj yesterday, Our Correspondent from Pabna reports: Four people died and 15 others were injured as a bus hit a three-wheeler Nasiman on Pabna-Dhaka Highway at Dariapur in Sujanagar upazila yesterday afternoon. Police said a Kushtia-bound bus SN Paribahan hit the three-wheeler 4:45 pm and both the vehicle fell into the ditch beside the road. Four of the dead are Md Hafizur Rahman, 30, of Baghailpur village in Sujanagar, Razia Begum, 25, of Singhair village in Bera upazila and her daughter Suchona, 6, and Helal Uddin, 35 of Kushtia. Police said the accident occurred as the driver of the bus lost his control over the steering. The injured, most of them in critical condition, were rushed to different hospitals. UNB Gazipur adds: The death of a female garments worker in a road accident sparks off violent protest by workers in Sadar upazila yesterday. Police said Rizia Akhter, 50, cleaner of Mim Fashion Ware Limited at Bhogra, died on the spot when hit by a covered van on Bason road while she was going to the factory at about 2:30pm. Later, agitating workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway and damaged 6/7 vehicles suspending traffic movement for half an hour. Our Chandpur Correspondent adds: Two people were killed and six others injured in separate road accidents in Sadar and Motlob South upazilas yesterday. Saudi expatriate Abul Kashem, 30, died on the spot and six others were seriously injured around 3:00pm as a CNG-run auto rickshaw hit a motorcycle. In another accident, a truck hit Lokman Hossain, 35, at Motlob South upazila Bazar and he died at Chandpur Sadar hospital in the afternoon. Our Jhenidah Correspondent adds: A schoolboy was killed in a road crash on Jhenidah-Jessore Highway at Kaliganj main bus stand in the town early yesterday. Salim Raja, 15 son of Ali Akbar of Goatoli village in Chowgasha upazila and class ten student of a madrasa, died instantly as a bus hit him while crossing the road. BSS Laxmipur reports: Five people were critically injured in collision between two busses at Mia Rasta on the Laxmipur-Ramgati Highway of the district yesterday. In Narayanganj, two people, including a driver of CNG-run autorickshaw, were killed instantly as a covered van hit the three wheeler on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Mirertek in Sonargaon upazila about 7:30am yesterday. They are Kamal Hossain, 35, the driver, and Abdul Qadir, 25. Our Correspondent from Netrakona says: Abul Kashem, 48, of Kachrai village in Purbadhala upazila was crushed under wheels of train at Purbabazar Rail Crossing in the upazila about 12:30pm yesterday.
