The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide Bangladesh around Tk 14 crore for the next four years to help the government quickly and effectively respond to any disaster and recover from it, says a media release. In this regard, UNDP has launched Early Recovery Facility (ERF) that will mobilise resources to plan and implement interventions to ensure that the people affected by disasters not only recover quickly but also achieve lasting development gains. The UNDP fund of Tk 14 crore will be further supplemented by contributions from development partners to support the government's relief and early recovery initiatives. Stefan Priesner, acting resident representative of UNDP, Bangladesh, said, “The concept of early recovery means building back better from the day the disaster strikes.” “UNDP has long stood shoulder to shoulder with the Government of Bangladesh in times of crisis and the establishment of this facility re-enforces this partnership”, he said. Priesner said the ERF aims to support the government to deliver a balanced approach to recovery, including shelter, livelihoods development, and other issues like gender and social inclusion. ERF's strong emphasis lies on the most vulnerable groups who are worst affected by disasters and least able to recover on their own, he added. It also aims to promote national ownership of the post-disaster early recovery process by closely working with the disaster management and relief division, ministry of food and disaster management, directorate of relief and rehabilitation, NGOs, and UN agencies.
