Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed the country's law enforcing agencies to act more effectively to ensure security of people's life and property. “The existing law and order situation in the country is better than that in any time of the past. But there is no scope to be complacent. More effective role is needed to ensure security of public life and property,” she said. The PM was addressing a meeting, arranged on the occasion of the 31st National Rally of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP), with the force's officers at its headquarters at Bangladesh Ansar Academy in Safipur, Gazipur. The prime minister asked the Ansar and VDP officers to take necessary action against those who confuse people using the name of Islam in the rural areas. “You can create mass awareness among the village people against the misinterpretation of Islam, the religion of peace.” Hasina warned that the government will not spare any force or person who creates anarchy and disorder in the society. “Any evil activity must be curbed with iron hand.” She also asked the officers and members of the force to work sincerely so that the country's democracy always remains uninterrupted in the future. “Bangladesh could not attain its desired development, as the anti-liberation forces were in the state power for long,” she said. The premier told the officers that Ansar and VDP will soon get specific responsibility to maintain law and order and to protect the country's airports, land ports, government and non-government industrial institutions, mills, and factories. “Necessary rules and regulations regarding the specific responsibility of Ansar and VDP will be formulated soon.” The government is also planning to introduce risk allowance for Ansar and VDP like other forces, she added. Hasina said that to involve the Ansar and VDP force in the government' s endeavour for digital Bangladesh, the members of Ansar and VDP will be given modern training both home and abroad. “The government will take steps to create Ansar and VDP force's own information network linking divisional, district, upazila and union units.” She added that the government has taken steps to raise four more battalions of the force and it will be implemented very soon. Earlier, addressing the grand rally at the academy's parade ground, Hasina urged Ansar and VDP members to work with the people for socioeconomic development. She also asked them to encourage the people in villages to cultivate all fallow lands to help attain food security. The lands of absentee owners also have to be cultivated for increasing food production, she added. The PM mentioned that the government is disbursing agricultural loan of Tk 12,000 crore for the farmers and also allocated Tk 4,000 crore as subsidy to the agriculture sector.
