The holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi was observed in the country on Wednesday with religious fervour and due solemnity commemorating the birth of Great Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) on this day in the month of Rabiul Awal 1,441 years ago with divine blessings for mankind. Muslims across the country joined special prayers and staged colourful street processions to mark the day which is also the day of 'Ufat' (departure) of the Prophet (PBUH). Different religious, socio-political and cultural organisations drew up programmes in the capital and elsewhere in the country marking the day. The programmes included bringing out processions and arranging discussions and milad mahfils. City roads were decorated with national flags and colourful festoons inscribed with 'Allahu Akbar' and 'Kalima'. The day was a public holiday. President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion. Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private TV channels and radio stations aired programmes, while newspapers published special articles highlighting the significance of the day. Marking the day, a fortnight-long programme organised by Islamic Foundation began at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque previous night. State Minister for Religious Affairs advocate Md Shahjahan Mian inaugurated the programme that includes seminar, Naat-e-Rasul and milad mahfil, exhibition on Islamic books and Islamic cultural competition for children. Thousands of devotees joined a special prayer and a subsequent colourful street march as part of the celebration.
