HC asks govt to preserve Jalalabad, Osmani Shishu parks
The High Court yesterday directed the government to maintain and preserve Jalalabad Shishu Park and Osmani Shishu Udyan in Sylhet, which were allegedly damaged earlier, as park by demarcating those.
Delivering a judgement on a writ petition, the court also ordered the authorities concerned to stop commercial activities in the park and udyan, and their grabbing in order to restore their character as park.
An HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain came up with the verdict following the writ petition filed as public interest litigation by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association.
BELA filed the petition in December 2006 seeking necessary directives from the HC on the authorities to maintain and preserve the park and udyan as park.
Earlier on December 17, 2006, the HC has issued injunction on construction of any structure in the park and udyan and also a rule on the authorities to explain why they should not be directed to maintain and preserve the two.
Advocate Iqbal Kabir Lytton appeared for BELA, while Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain stood for government.
