Rajshahi Water Treatment Plant Opens Today

Plan to meet 90pc water demand

Shyampur Padma River Water Treatment Plant set up at the cost of Tk 82 crore will be inaugurated in Rajshahi city today, according to officials. The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) has implemented the water treatment plant project in Shyampur of the city. With two units, the plant will treat the Padma's water and add some 2,250-cusec water per hour to water supply network daily, meeting the 90 percent water demand of the city. Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) used to provide 74 percent of daily water demand, said M Ashraful Haque, superintending engineer of RCC. After inauguration today, the DPHE will run the plant experimentally for two months and then the plant will be handed over to the newly established Water and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) in Rajshahi city. Rajshahi Wasa started its operation yesterday at Poba Water Treatment Plant building in the city after the government allocated Tk 4 crore for the Wasa'a functioning. Rejaul Haque, a joint secretary of the establishment ministry, took over as Rajshahi Wasa's first managing director. Haque said the Wasa is likely to be formally inaugurated next week. With establishment of the Wasa at Sopura in the city, RCC's water section ceased to exist yesterday. A total of 205 officials and employees, including 62 permanent staffs of RCC's water section, have been shifted to the Wasa.
