Clean Dhaka mission starts

A six-day long 'Clean Dhaka' mission by Japanese and Dhaka University (DU) students begins yesterday to change the people's mindset in freeing the city from waste materials. The objective of the mission aims to create awareness among the city dwellers for environment protection regarding solid waste management. The mission was inaugurated at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of DU. DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, President of DU Teachers Association Dr Anwar Hossain, Rokeya Hall Provost Prof Nazma Shaheen, Japanese Language Course Teacher of DU Modern Language Institute Rezaul Karim, DU Pro-VC Harunur Rashid, ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh Tamotsu Shinotsuka, Chief Representatives of JICA Dr Takao Toda were present at the programme. Through working together, students of Japan and DU will have an opportunity to stay and work together to develop the friendly relations between the two countries, speakers said. 100 Japanese volunteers of International Volunteer University Student Association (IVUSA), along with 130 students from DU, in cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Dhaka City Corporation are conducting the mission. Volunteers' activities include cleaning-DU campus, Sohrawardy Udyan, Some historical places, Ramna Park, Dhanmondi Park and purification of Jagannath Hall's pond water.
