Mufti Hannan, accomplice on fresh remand
Outlawed Harkatul Jihad (Huji) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan and one of his accomplices yesterday were taken on fresh remand for one day in connection with kidnapping a physician in September 2003.
Meanwhile, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Huji Abdul Hannan Sabbir and his accomplice Ainul Haque were interrogated for five days each in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ismail Hossain passed the order after Hannan and his accomplice Mufti Moinuddin alias Abu Zandal were produced before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.
In the forwarding report, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Fazlul Kabir of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), also the investigation officer (IO) of the case said the two were involved in the abduction of Dr Azizur Rahman.
They should be taken on remand to track down others responsible for the abduction, he said.
Earlier, Hannan and Zandal were remanded for several days, but the CID could not extract much information regarding the abduction.
Azizur Rahman, a homeopathic practitioner was kidnapped eight years ago on September 4 from his Mazar Road residence in Mirpur and was not seen since then.
Judicial Magistrate Kazi Shahidul Islam placed Sabbir and Ainul on a five-day remand after Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Keraniganj Police Station produced them before it with a fifteen-day remand prayer.
In the forwarding report, the IO said the two were involved in anti-state activities and were trying to ruin the country’s image.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Monday arrested Sabbir and Ainul from a hideout at Keraniganj.
