Shafique rejects remarks about constitution

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said it is not correct to say that the country is now without a Constitution. “The country's present Constitution is the one which has been printed in the light of the Supreme Court (SC) verdict that declared the 5th Amendment as illegal and scrapped," he said and called upon all to uphold the sanctity of the Constitution. The law minister made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at the 16th annual district convention of District-315A1 of Lions Club International at Sonargaon Hotel in the city. The Constitution was first formulated in 1972 with the spirit of Liberation War. After the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, military rulers had brought changes in the Constitution in unconstitutional manner through military decrees, he said. “There is no provision in the Constitution to change the constitution by military rule or military decrees. The manner of changing the Constitution has been mentioned in the constitution,” the minister said. Considering all these, the SC gave its verdict declaring illegal and void all the changes that were brought about in the constitution through military decrees and legalised by the 5th Amendment, he added. “Constitution has been printed in the light of that verdict.” Later, replying to a question during a press briefing, he said that although the BNP did not come to the special committee meeting despite invitation, its door is still open.
