Protect coastal people from natural calamity

Speakers at a seminar yesterday stressed the need for the government's effective measures to protect people in coastal areas because they are very much vulnerable to natural calamity. The government should chalk out a time-befitting plan of action and its proper implementation to ensure security for the people, they said. Centre for Coastal Development and Research in Bangladesh organised the seminar styled “The country will survive, if the coast survives” (Upokul Bachle, Desh Bachbe) at Jatiya Press Club in the city, said a press release. Speaking as the chief guest, former adviser to a caretaker government M Hafiz Uddin Khan opined for proper utilisation of funds donated for development of coastal areas. Lawmaker Hamidur Rahman recommended forming a separate ministry for coastal areas, comprised of 19 districts. Lawmaker Noni Gopal Mondol, Former adviser to a caretaker government Ruhul Alam Chowdhury, Dainik Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman, Dhaka University Prof Dr UBA Razia Akhter Banu and Dr Sukomol Barua also spoke.
