Showdown or Showoff?
The Bogra correspondent of a local English daily, in his report on April: 21; writes as follows: "aspirants for the post of Chairman are arranging
'showdowns' to attract votes, which involve musclemen"
The word 'showdown, as reflecting 'showoff'; is a new one to me! Usually a 'showdown' means a verbal or violent conflict between two persons or parties. It is not used to indicate the demonstration of strength. Support or popularity; which is the case in this election based report.
The correspondent, in this case meant 'showdown' as a demonstration of support to attract voters; while in the report published, he actually stated "showdown to attract voters"; also he wrote: “are in competition in arranging expensive 'showdowns'"
This should have been screened by the concerned editorial staff; or is it that they too knew nothing better to express the matter? Opinions from interested readers, will be very welcome!
