Indian army chief hands over 2 cannons

Indian Army Chief Gen Vijay Kumar Singh yesterday handed over two cannons, used during the liberation war against Pakistan occupation forces, to Bangladesh army. Gen Mohammad Abdul Mubeen, chief of Bangladesh Army, received the cannons, at a ceremony attended by freedom fighters and top military officials at Sena Kunja in Dhaka cantonment. "As a symbol of our courage and sacrifice in the liberation war, the two 3.7-inch Howitzers cannons will be preserved in the military museum," said ISPR sources. The two cannons are among the six provided by India, with which Bangladesh Army's first artillery unit named Mujib Battery was formed on July 22, 1971. The unit, named after Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was constituted in Konaban, India to enhance the capability of the freedom fighters. A week into introduction, the cannons successfully fired on enemies in Quaiyumpur, Kosba, Saldanadi, Akhaura, and Nazirhat, expediting the final victory. Gen Singh yesterday left Dhaka for India .
