Deteriorating law and order situation

Lax enforcement to blame
On any given day, headlines in newspapers and electronic media carry news items on attack by miscreants on individuals and establishments alike. The response by law enforcers follow the set pattern of informing the wider general public that measures are being taken and the matters are being treated with utmost attention. At the end of the day, to the great distress of not only those directly affected by attacks but the populace at large is that in most cases, those responsible are seldom caught. This is hardly a situation that can be condoned under any circumstances. Whether it is an attack on journalists en masse when criminals decide to storm the workplace of a news agency or in the recent case of a doctor being lured out of the safety of his house by kidnappers in the hope of ransom who is then critically injured when their demands are not met; the fact is that a general lack of progress by law enforcement agencies to investigate and apprehend criminals of various shades and hues is increasing unease in society. Even when the crime is heinous in nature as it happened with young Himadri Majumder Himu of Chittagong who was beaten, set upon by a pack of ferocious dogs and then unceremoniously pushed off a fourth floor of a building to fall to death nearly a month ago failed to move the authorities into action. What words of solace does one give to his parents? Mere excuses will no longer suffice. What must be realised is that by failing to tackle a situation that is fast becoming endemic in nature, authorities are not only failing to fulfil their duty as administrator and keeper of the 'law', the general apathy of law enforcers is unwittingly encouraging greater lawlessness where criminals may carry out their nefarious activities with all impunity. The government must crack down on this supposed lack of enthusiasm of enforcers to pursue and bring to book those who walk outside the law for in the final analysis of things it is to government people look to for a safe environment to live in.
