Master roll staff confine Kishoreganj municipal chairman
Master roll employees of Kishoreganj Municipality yesterday kept the acting chairman confined to his office as an office order served in last month made them virtually terminated.
About 89 employees who served on master roll basis confined acting chairman Abu Naser Mintu Hilali to his office in the morning demanding withdrawal of the office order, regular payment of their salaries and regularization of their jobs.
The aggrieved employees made way for the acting chairman when the municipality authorities assured them of settling the matter on February 27.
A few months after the arrest of municipality chairman Abu Taher Miah on charge of bribery, Magistrate Habibunnahar took over charges of the municipality as chief executive officer (CEO).
Last month she passed an order not to pay salary to over 89 master roll employees of the municipality.
Most of them have been serving for over 21 years.
When contacted, CEO Habibunnahar said earlier people were employed on master role basis, in defiance of the circular issued by local government department in 2005.
According to the circular, municipality authorities could employ people on master roll basis only for the garbage section but such appointments were made to the posts of officers, drivers and peons in different sections including water supply department, she added.
A few accounts section employees seeking anonymity said earlier elected chairmen and influential commissioners were involved in such master roll appointments allegedly for bribes.
