Agitating Buet teachers and students yesterday continued their sit-in to press home their demands including resignation of the vice-chancellor and pro vice-chancellor. They started their demonstration around 11:00am and winded it up at 11:45am, about one hour in advance, and went to Central Shaheed Minar to pay last tributes to acclaimed writer and film-maker Humayun Ahmed. The teachers and students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) demanded prompt government action to break the deadlock at the university. "We haven't seen any step from the government yet. The Buet family is waiting to see a decision from the government soon," Prof Mujibur Rahman, president of Buet Teachers' Association, told The Daily Star. The teachers do not want to continue the sit-in till July 30, he added. On Saturday, the teachers postponed their decision to resign en masse until July 30 to "back" government efforts to resolve the crisis. Contacted, a top education ministry official said although the ministry had initiated steps to end the crisis, it is unhappy with the teachers' decision to continue the sit-in. Buet Teachers' Association began the demonstration on April 7 demanding removal of its VC Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof M Habibur Rahman over 16 allegations against them.
