Increasing number of Bangladeshis study in US

Says Mozena at inauguration of TV and film studies department at DU

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan W Mozena yesterday said the enrolment rate of Bangladeshi students in US educational institutions was the fastest compared to those from South and Central Asia. The potential for academic and research exchange between American and Bangladeshi educational institutions was enormous, he said. . The ambassador was addressing the launching ceremony of the newly created Department of Television and Film Studies at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban in Dhaka University (DU). Addressing the ceremony, Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain said television and film were not only tools for entertainment but also for informing and educating people. “Our constitution assures freedom of the media. I believe graduates of the department will be able to use television and film to portray the country's rich culture, language and history before the nation and the world,” he added. DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said television and film were two significant sectors which could help countrymen observe western ideas and devise a democratic model for the country itself. “While media has many positives to play, it can also be a lethal weapon in the hands of spin-doctors,” he added. Prof Janet Wasko, knight chair in communication research, University of Oregon, USA, presented a keynote, “New challenges for global Hollywood”. The department Chairman Dr AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan also spoke at the programme.
