Life altered in a moment for reckless driving

Life changed in a matter of seconds for Shamma Nasrin when a bus ran over her legs in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Sunday. The 22-year-old student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) is undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor). Doctors had to amputate her left leg on the same day while her right leg was fractured in the accident. “We have amputated her left leg below the knee to save her life. We will have to amputate it above the knee in the next operation to avoid further infection,” Dr RR Kairy told The Daily Star yesterday. She can leave the hospital after a month, he added. While visiting Nitor yesterday this correspondent found many of Shamma's friends gathered in front of her bed doing anything possible to ease her suffering. Learning about the incident, Buet Vice-Chancellor Prof SM Nazrul Islam had rushed to Nitor on Sunday night. Many other teachers also visited Shamma yesterday. Victim's friend Suraiya Aktar said Shamma slipped off the bus while trying to get on it. The rear wheel of the bus went over both of her legs. Police filed a case against the bus driver Faruque Hossain and helper Rubel Howladar, who were detained after the accident. Police produced the duo before a Dhaka court yesterday demanding seven days remand but the court granted four, said Dhirendranath, sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station.
