'Cellphone towers pose health hazard'
Speakers at a roundtable discussion yesterday urged the country's cellphone operators to set up their antennas (transmission towers) outside the residential areas to avert serious health hazards caused by electromagnetic radiation.
They were speaking at the discussion on “Threat of Electropollution: Our Responsibility” at the seminar hall of Theoretical Physics Department of Dhaka University (DU).
'Paribesh Bachao Andolan' (Poba) and the DU Theoretical Physics Department jointly organised the programme.
Fatal dieses like cancer and leukaemia could be caused by the radiation from cellphones and the transmission stations, they said.
Prof Golam Mohammed Bhuiyan of the department read out a keynote paper at the programme.
Transmission towers set up on rooftops in residential areas including educational institutions and hospitals pose serious threats to human body, he said.
