CU Deans' Election
3 independent candidates pull out
Three "aggrieved" senior teachers, who had filed nomination papers as independent candidates after being denied nomination from Awami League-backed Yellow panel, yesterday withdrew their candidacy for the upcoming deans' election at Chittagong University.
Another rebel candidate, Prof Golam Kibria Bhuiyan (arts faculty), however, is firm to his decision to run independently, said Election Commissioner and Acting CU Registrar Prof Mohammad Sofiul Alam.
The three teachers are Associate Professor AKM Mainul Hoque Miajee (science faculty), Prof Jyoti Prokash Dutt (social science faculty) and Prof Mohammad Shah Alam (biological science faculty). They pulled out of the race on the last day for the withdrawal of candidacy yesterday.
Prof Jyoti Prakash Dutt said he had submitted his nomination paper as a token of protest, assuming the Yellow panel leaders would negotiate with them. "But they neglected us.”
The professor however said the Yellow panel-nominated candidates would get his moral support.
The deans' election for seven faculties of CU has been scheduled for August 6, but the White panel backed by opposition BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami has not nominated any candidate in two faculties--law and engineering.
Yellow panel's Dr Abdullah Al Faruk has thus been elected dean of the law faculty uncontested. No one has come victorious in engineering faculty, as there is an independent candidate against the Yellow panel contender.
