Students protest unhygienic food at RU hall
Several hundred residential students of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall at Rajshahi University (RU) vandalised the hall's dining hall and laid siege to its main gate protesting serving of unhygienic foods on Friday.
Sources at the hall said some students were engaged in vandalism at the dining hall around 8:30pm. Later, they laid siege to the hall's main gate for an hour till 10:00pm demanding cut of recently imposed charges of meals and improvement of foods qualities.
According to the agitating students, although the hall authorities raised the charge Tk 5 for per meals in the month of Ramadan, qualities of foods have not been improved.
The charge of a meal during dinner has been increased from Tk16 to Tk 20, while it has been increased to Tk 25 from Tk 20 for Sahri meal, they said.
Saidur Rahman, a residential student of the hall, said they often fall sick after taking foods at the dining hall as foods are severed in an unhygienic way.
Jamal Uddin, manager of the dining hall, said they always try to prepare and serve foods in a hygienic way.
He, however, admitted about serving of poor quality foods saying that charges of meals are not enough compared to prices of commodities in kitchen market.
Prof Shaheed Iqbal, provost of the hall, said they would take steps after investigating into the matter soon.
RU Proctor Prof Chowdhury Muhammad Zakaria said they asked all the hall provosts to take steps to improve the quality of foods at dinning halls.
