Two die of eating 'poisonous food'

A 10-year-old boy died and about 150 people fell sick after having "poisonous food items" at an iftar programme at Bibhagdi village in Abhaynagar upazila Thursday. Niamul, son of Jahangir Hossain of the village, died in the upazila health complex yesterday morning. Among the sick, 31 were undergoing treatment in the hospital for dehydration. Dr Mahbubur Rahman said the villagers fell sick for having toxic food. The hospital authorities set up a temporary camp to treat the people, he added. The iftar programme was organised by the villagers at the village mosque. Our Benapole correspondent reports, a man died and his wife fell ill after they ate poisonous puffer fish (potka) at Mallikpur village in Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore Thursday night. Khadiza Begum, wife of the deceased, Subid Ali Mahaldar, 44, said they got sick after eating the cooked fish. Locals took them to the upazila health complex. Subid died there around 9:00pm.
