GB Ordinance Amendment

Move criticised by physicians

Staff Correspondent
Expressing concern over the cabinet's nod on amending the ordinance of Grameen Bank, physicians yesterday urged the government not to destroy the bank through amendment. In a joint statement, they also requested the government to refrain from undermining the autonomy of the bank. On behalf of 1,111 physicians, Dr SM Rafiqul Islam, former member of central executive parishad of Bangladesh Medical Association, expressed grave concern over the government's initiative. The Grameen Bank model that was formulated by Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus to alleviate poverty is exemplary to the whole world, he said. He urged the government to strengthen poverty alleviation through supporting the bank. The statement, signed by Dr Islam, also said that Grameen Bank has created an instance of women's empowerment.
