'Ensure rights of Harijans'
Speakers at a meeting held here yesterday stressed the need for ensuring rights of Harijans.
Kishoreganj Harijan Development Society (HDS) organized the meeting attended by Harijan leaders of Netrakona, Mymensing, Narsingdi, Narayanganj and Gazipur.
Held at the municipal Harijan colony in Roth Khola area here, the meeting was chaired by HDS president Pothik Badol Basfore.
Speakers lamented saying the sweepers had voting power but they are being deprived of their fundamental rights. They said no elderly people or any widow of their community received any allowance from the government.
They urged the government to give them quota in service and education like other tribal communities.
They alleged that their community members are also being deprived of right to jobs. They cited the examples of recruitment in different government and non-government offices including the civil surgeon's (CS) office where only one out of 10 posts was appointed from sweepers.
