Admission to Buet and medical colleges

Inordinate delay should be avoided
We are perturbed by the uncertainties staring in the face of numerous students seeking admission into the medical colleges and the Buet. By contrast, the dates for distribution of admission forms for honours courses have already been announced for the Dhaka, Rajshahi, Jahangirnagar, Chittagong, Khulna and Jagannath universities. The upshot of this may be that the sessions of the public and private medical colleges as well as at the Buet may lag behind those of the public universities. And the drive to make up for the lag may result in an undue haste in finishing the academic sessions of the former. The delay in the academic sessions at Buet is due to teachers' and students' unresolved demand for removal of the incumbent VC. On the other hand, the admission to medical colleges is stuck up over the institutional decision to forgo admission tests in favour CGPA scored by the students. As for the medical colleges, we advocated a combination of CGPA and admission test arguing that the gradation system is yet to conclusively establish its credibility. We reiterate our stand on the issue. Besides, there are far too many CGPA achievers to sift through for admission. Moreover, the previous system offered the opportunity for greater access to medical education based on individual aptitude and merit. Those who for some reason could not make the grades would be enabled to prove their proficiency at the admission test. For its part, the government would do well to address the crisis created over admission at Buet. As for the decision to do away with admission test at the medical colleges, the matter is in court. While the authorities are awaiting its decision the institutions must be ready in all respects to start the admission process as soon as the HC ruling is in hand.
