2 months' fishing ban on southern rivers takes effect
Official ban on fishing in major rivers of the southern region for the next two months is being enforced from yesterday.
The ban was imposed for ensuring safe laying of eggs and increasing fish resources through protection of fries.
About 340-kilometre area of the Ilisha, the Meghna,the Tentulia, the Bishkhali and the Padma in Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barguna, Munshiganj, Chandpur and Laxmipur districts have been declared fish sanctuaries.
Sources in District Fishermen's Association and District Fisheries Office said the ban was imposed along 100-kilometre area from Shatnol to Char Alexander of the Meghna and the Padma and branch rivers, 90-kilometre from Madanpur Char-Shababazpur of the Meghna and the Ilisha and branches, 100-kilometre from Veduria to Char Rustom of the Bishkhali and the Tentulia and branches and 50 kilometre from Kalapara to Charmanik.
Assistant director of Barisal Divisional Office of Fisheries Directorate said enforcement of the ban will be monitored strictly with the help of local administration and law enforcers from March 01 to April 30.
Special grants, facilities and alternative employment opportunities will be provided to affected and unemployed fishermen by the government.
However, Md Yusuf Ali, organising secretary of District Fishermen's Association said the monthly allowance of Tk 200 to 300 meant for each fishermen is too meager to maintain his family.
