The government is “trying to protect†the killers of Bishwajit Das, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad alleged yesterday. The 24-year-old tailor was brutally murdered by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men of Jagannath University during an opposition blockade last December 9. “Sixteen crore people have seen (on television) how BCL's activists viciously hacked Bishwajit to death in broad daylight. However, there was no mention of such attack in the autopsy report,†Ershad told a gathering before Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka. Ershad, a key leader in the ruling Awami League-led grand alliance, also placed wreaths at the crime scene and demanded exemplary punishment to Bishwajit's killers under a speedy trial. Ershad also visited Bishwajit's family members and gave them a cheque for Tk 50,000. He urged the government to observe December 9 as “Shaheed Bishwajit Day†and to build a monument after him. Police arrested 11 people in connection with the murder. On January 3, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia visited and gave Bishwajit's parents Tk 2 lakh.
