Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi yesterday demanded that the government expedite the trial of war criminals, ensures peace in the country and imposes a ban on religion-based politics. Udichi Central Council General Secretary Probir Sarder in a written statement made the demand at a press conference at its central office in the capital. Communal and fundamentalist forces have created a reign of terror in the country, he said, adding that religion-based politics was rightly banned in the 1972 constitution. Taking advantage of the weakness of the post-1975 government, the communal forces gathered strength and now have openly declared a challenge to destroy the achievements of the 1971 Liberation War, says a press release. Indications of this menace are clear -- war crimes accused Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury's open threat in the war crimes tribunal; the US ambassador's advice to hold talks with Jamaat-e-Islami, the political organisation of war criminals; and the Turkish president's letter to his Bangladeshi counterpart requesting not to try the war criminals, said Probir. The cultural organisation announced to hold a “Protest Week” from January 12 to 18 in support of its demands and urged people to build mass movement for realising the demands. During the aforementioned time period, the organisation's district units and branches will organise cultural functions, human chains, roadside meetings, protest processions and film shows. Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi President Kamal Lohani, Vice-President Mahmud Selim, Assistant General Secretary Jamshed Anwar Tapan, Secretariat Member Sangeeta Imam and Shibani Bhattacharya were present on the occasion.
