A “shoot-out” between a gang of robbers and police left the gang leader dead at Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar early yesterday. The dead is Malek, 40, whose gang is known as Malek Group. Police arrested three associates of Malek--Shafique, Nur Mohammad, and Jamir--at the scene after the gunfight, said Cox's Bazar SP Azad Mia. Jamir is reported to be a Rohingya, said Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Forhad of Teknaf police. The OC said his Sub-Inspector Abdul Munnaf and constables Md Nazmul and Md Mansur were also injured in the shoot-out. Tipped-off, a police team raided a small hill at Noakhalipara around 3:30am, said SP Azad. The “gunfight” erupted when the robbers, sensing their presence, opened fire on the law enforcers, who retaliated. Police found Malek's bullet-hit body lying on the ground. Police also seized some arms and ammunition from the arrestees, said the SP.
